The History of the beautiful game - tactics - modern formations

4-3-3

The 4-3-3 was a development of the 4-2-4, and was played by the Brazilian national team in the 1962 World Cup. The extra player in midfield allowed a stronger defence, and the midfield could be staggered for different effects. The three midfielders normally play closely together to protect the defence, and move laterally across the field as a coordinated unit. The three forwards split across the field to spread the attack, and are expected to "tackle back". When used from the start of a game, this formation is widely regarded as encouraging defensive play, and should not be confused with the practice of modifying a 4-4-2 by bringing on an extra forward to replace a midfield player when behind in the latter stages of a game.

A staggered 4-3-3 involving a defensive midfielder (usually numbered 4 or 6) and two attacking midfielders (numbered 8 and 10) was commonplace in Italy, Argentina and Uruguay during the 1960s and 1970s. The Italian variety of 4-3-3 was simply a modification of WM, by converting one of the two wing-halves to a libero (sweeper), whereas the Argentine and Uruguayan formations were derived from 2-3-5 and retained the notional attacking centre-half. The national team which made this famous was the Dutch team of the 1974 and 1978 World Cups, even though the team won neither.

In club football, the team that brought this formation to the forefront was the famous Ajax Amsterdam team of the early 1970s, which won three European Cups with Johan Cruyff. Chelsea have used this formation to great effect under José Mourinho in the time he has been at the club. While getting his team to constantly press the opposition when defending, he also likes the two wingers to come back to create a 4-5-1 formation.

4-4-2

This adaptable formation is the most common in football today. The midfielders are required to work hard to support both the defense and the attack: one of the central midfielders is expected to go upfield as often as possible to support the forward pair, while the other will play a "holding role", shielding the defence; the two wide midfield players must move up the flanks to the goal line in attacks and yet also protect the fullback wide defenders. It is a very popular formation in Britain especially where it is sometimes called a &裟flat-back 4&裟.

4-4-2 diamond or 4-3-1-2

The 4-4-2 diamond (also described as 4-1-2-1-2 or 4-3-1-2) staggers the midfield. The width in the team has to come from the full-backs pushing forwards.

4-4-1-1

A variation of 4-4-2 with one of the strikers playing &裟in the hole&裟, or as a &裟second striker&裟, slightly behind their partner. The second striker is generally a more creative player, the playmaker

4-3-2-1 (the &裟Christmas Tree&裟 formation)

This is another variation of the 4-4-2, commonly described as the &裟Christmas Tree&裟 formation. Another forward is brought on for a midfielder to play &裟in the hole&裟. so leaving two forwards slightly behind the most forward striker. Terry Venables, first brought in this system throughout England&裟s Euro 96 campaign. Glenn Hoddle then used this formation poorly during his time in charge of the England national football team and since then the formation has lost its popularity in England.

5-3-2

This formation has three central defenders (possibly with one acting as a sweeper.) This system is heavily reliant on the wing-backs providing width for the team. The two wide full-backs act as wing-backs. It is their job to work their flank along the full length of the pitch, supporting both the defence and the attack.

5-3-2 with Sweeper or 1-4-3-2

A variant of the above, this involves a more withdrawn sweeper, who may join the midfield, and more advanced full-backs.

3-4-3

Using a 3-4-3 the midfielders expected to split their time between attacking and defending. Having only three dedicated defenders means that if the opposing team breaks through the midfield, they will have a greater chance to score than with a more conventional defensive configuration, such as 4-5-1 or 4-4-2. However, the three forwards allow for a greater concentration on offense. This formation is used by more offensive-minded teams. To use this effectively a team must have 3 defenders which can hold their own and a keeper who is not afraid to leave the box.

3-5-2

This formation is similar to 5-3-2 except that the two wingmen are oriented more towards the attack. Because of this, the central midfielder tends to remain further back in order to help prevent counter-attacks. It differs from the classical 3-5-2 of the WW by having a non-staggered midfield. It was used for the first time at international level by the Argentinian coach Carlos Salvador Bilardo in the FIFA World Cup Mexico 1986[citation needed]. Many teams also use a central attacking midfielder and two defensive midfielders, so the midfielders form a W formation.

3-6-1

This uncommon but modern formation obviously focuses in the ball possession in the midfield. In fact, it is very rare to see it as an initial formation, as it is better used to keep results. Its more common variant is 3-4-2-1, which uses two wingbacks and a square of two centre midfielder and two playmakers. The latter ones can switch for the free roles, performing as a second striker or helping the centre midfielders in order to keep the ball under their control. When there are no spaces in the centre, the wingbacks must provide crosses from deep-line to the forward, as well as protection from the forward runs from the opposition wingers/fullbacks. The lone forward must be tactically gifted, because he is not only focused in scoring, but to play back to the goal to assist with back passes to his teammates. Once the team is leading the game, the tactics focuses even more in ball control, short passes and time wasting. On the other hand, when the team is losing, at least one of the playmakers will play more often in the edge of the area to add depth to the attack. Guus Hiddink is one of the few coaches who has used this formation.

4-5-1

4-5-1 could be seen as a defensive formation, however if the two midfield wingers play a more attacking role it can be likened to 4-3-3. The formation can be used to grind out 0-0 draws or preserve a lead, as the packing of the centre midfield makes it difficult for the opposition to build-up play. Because of the &裟closeness&裟 of the midfield, the opposing team&裟s forwards will often be starved of possession. However, due to the lone striker, the centre of the midfield does have the responsibility of pushing forward as well. The defensive midfielder will often control the pace of the game.

A modification of this formation is also used by José Mourinho&裟s Chelsea F.C. side. This modified version is the 4-1-4-1 where only one striker is used and the wingers are given the responsibility of moving the ball forward and attacking. A holding midfielder is also positioned in front of the back four. This provides freedom for the rest of the team to move forward and attack as the defense will be "protected" by the holding midfielder.

4-2-3-1

This formation is widely used by Spanish and French sides: it is a defensive formation which is quite flexible, as both the side midfielders and the fullbacks may join the attack, usually on the counter. In defense, this formation is similar to the 4-5-1. It is used to maintain possession of the ball and stopping opponent attacks by controlling the midfield area of the field. The lone striker may be very tall and strong to hold the ball up as his midfielders and fullbacks join him in attack. The striker could also be very fast. In these cases, the opponent&裟s defense will be forced to fall back early, thereby leaving space for the offensive central midfielder. This formation is used especially when a playmaker is to be highlighted.

5-4-1

This is a particularly defensive formation, with an isolated forward and a packed defense. Again however, a couple of attacking fullbacks can make this formation resemble something like a 3-4-3.

How to get 7 stars in all training categories

So, here is my go at it. I try to be more simple and specific, including recommended coaches. All in all, you are going to need 9 coaches, 1 of them could be your assistant manager (maybe for the hardest training part, which is Set Pieces). So, choose them wisely and remember that you can use the same coaches for your youth squad (no need to buy more there).

Training Categories

Strength
You need to get 1 Fitness Coach who has 18-20 at "Fitness" Coaching statistic. And then assign him only to Strength.
A recommended and reasonably cheap candidate is Michael Brouwers.

Aerobic
You need to get 1 Fitness Coach who has 18-20 at "Fitness" Coaching statistic. And then assign him only to Aerobic.
A recommended and reasonably cheap candidate is Christian Jahan.

Goalkeeping
You need to get 1 Goalkeeping Coach who has 18-20 at "Coaching Goalkeepers" Coaching statistic. And then assign him only to Goalkeeping, you cannot assign him anywhere else anyway.
A recommended and reasonably cheap candidate is Arpe Boerma.

Tactics
You need to get 1 Coach who has 18-20 at "Tactical" Coaching statistic. And then assign him only to Tactics.
A recommended and reasonably cheap candidate is Luc Rabat.

Ball Control
You need to get 1 Coach who has 18-20 at "Technique" Coaching statistic and 15-20 at "Mental" Coaching statistic. And then assign him only to Ball Control.
A recommended and reasonably cheap candidate is Atanas Kikyov.

Defending
You need to get 1 Coach who has 18-20 at "Defending" Coaching statistic and 15-20 at "Tactical" Coaching statistic. And then assign him only to Defending.
A recommended and reasonably cheap candidate is Guido Vergeylen.

Attacking
You need to get 1 Coach who has 18-20 at "Attacking" Coaching statistic. And then assign him only to Attacking.
A recommended and reasonably cheap candidate is Olivier Dall&裟Oglio.

Shooting
You need to get 1 Coach who has 18-20 at "Technique" Coaching statistic and 15-20 at "Tactical" Coaching statistic. And then assign him only to Shooting.
A recommended and reasonably cheap candidate is Michel Albaladejo.

Set Pieces
Probably the hardest category to get 7 stars. You need to get 1 Coach who has 18-20 at "Technique" Coaching statistic and 15-20 at "Mental" Coaching statistic and 15-20 at "Attacking" Coaching statistic. And then assign him only to Set Pieces.
A recommended and reasonably cheap candidate is Diolei Candido.

Have fun reaching 7 stars in all your training categories

When viewing your team screen you can get your Assistant Manager to pick your squad for a match by selecting 'Ask To Pick' from the actions menu.

The relationships that form between the backroom staff can now be stronger. This can mean that backroom staff, who have each other set as favourite staff, may leave the club together when the manager is sacked or gets a new job. NEW

Beginner Level - General

When choosing your captain, the most important attribute to consider is his influence.

A player with a high penalty taking attribute is likely to be a good choice to take your spot-kicks.

A player with a high corner attribute would be a good choice to take your corners.

If you want to be a danger from throw-ins, choose a player with a high long throws attribute to take them.

With the right guidance a youngster described as a 'Wonderkid' could become a world class player.

Withdrawing a player from international duty with his national team may adversely affect his morale, or worse, cause the player to dislike you.

Rejecting a job offer from another club will improve your popularity with your club's board and the fans.

Players with high adaptability are less likely to get homesick as they are better able to adjust to new countries and cultures.

Teams in a strong financial position who consistently fill out their stadiums are prime candidates for stadium expansion.

The board may decide to build a new stadium if you don't own your current ground or if you are unable to further expand it.

Sending youngsters out on loan is a great way for them to get competitive match experience.

When a player has just returned from injury it's a good idea build his match fitness back up through reserve fixtures and then slowly reintroduce him back into the first-team.

The ratings for reflexes, handling, communication, jumping and positioning are generally a good indicator for how good a goalkeeper is.

If you're looking for a good wing-back pay special attention to an individual's positioning, tackling, stamina, pace and acceleration.

Positioning, tackling, pace and anticipation are just some of the important characteristics that make for a good full-back.

A good centre-back will usually have high ratings for tackling, jumping, positioning, heading, strength, marking, bravery and team work.

Pace, dribbling, passing, off the ball, creativity, stamina and crossing are just some of the important characteristics that make for a good winger.

Passing, off the ball, creativity, technique, dribbling and stamina are just some of the important characteristics that make for a good attacking midfielder.

A good defensive midfielder will most likely have high ratings for tackling, work rate, stamina and positioning.

Pace, acceleration, dribbling, technique, finishing and off the ball are just some of the important characteristics that make for a good pacey striker.

Jumping, heading, strength and off the ball are just some of the important characteristics that make for a good target man.

The better a physio the more able he is to accurately predict how long a player will take to recover from injury.

When a player is outraged over something it can indicate that he is quite temperamental and maybe has a low level of professionalism.

When a player is worried or upset over something it can indicate that he doesn't handle pressure very well.

Be wary when declaring an interest in another job. Your current employers may not take too kindly to you casting glances elsewhere.

You can increase your popularity with your club's board if you deny speculation in the media that links you to another job.

If your players are picking up lots of injuries in training, keep a close eye on the type of injury that has occurred and think about reducing the intensity of your strength or aerobic training.

You can improve squad morale by winning football matches or rewarding them with new contracts.

You can damage a player's morale if you continuously make offers for players at other clubs who play in the same position.

Be careful when asking an injured player to take an injection and play through the pain barrier for a game. There is a risk that you may upset him so save these instances for really important matches.

Think carefully before issuing your board with an ultimatum as there is a good chance they will remove you from your position as Manager if they think you're being unreasonable.

One of the best ways to ensure you do not run into debt is by keeping an eye on your total wage budget. The board will be more appreciative if you stay within the limits set.

When managing a low profile club, arranging friendly games during the pre-season against high profile teams is a great way to boost your club's finances through additional gate receipts.

Disciplining players without justification is likely to upset multiple members of the playing staff.

Notes can be used to record useful information about a player such as whether he responds better to criticism or praise.

Having players in your squad who list one another as favoured personnel will generally benefit the team.

When negotiating contract terms with a player, you should consider how additional bonuses may impact your club's finances.

Sometimes placing a left footed striker in the right attacking slot increases the chances that he will score goals. Swapping strikers also makes them hard to man-mark.

If you are heavy favourites for an upcoming match, casting doubts on your team can sometimes make your side even more determined to prove you wrong.

When consulting your Groundsman over pitch dimensions, it is important to keep in mind how your team plays. Having a wide pitch may suit teams that play with wingers whereas it may have a detrimental effect on a team that plays narrow and through the middle. NEW

It is now possible to 'Declare Player Available For Reserves'. This could prove useful for players in your first-team squad who are just on their way back from an injury lay-off. NEW

Beginner Level - Match

When an icon with a green cross appears next to a player it indicates he is carrying a knock.

Using easy or normal tackling in a match will reduce the risk of your team picking up cautions or red cards, particularly if the game is being officiated by a strict referee.

Be aware of how the weather can effect your team's performances. Bad conditions are more likely to penalise those who play a short passing game, try adopting a more direct style at times like this.

Players with low stamina may tire and struggle to play at their best, particularly in poor weather conditions or high tempo games.

When watching a match you can keep an eye on the opposing team's formation and changes made during the game by selecting 'Formations' from the 'tree' menu in the side-bar.

When using the 'Use Playmaker' tactic, your players will generally look to try and pass the ball to the person you've assigned to that role.

A playmaker is someone who generally looks to receive the ball and dictate play.

A target man is someone who will look to bring others into play via flick-ons or holding up the ball.

Constantly changing your tactic and making dramatic alterations to the style of play will not help your players settle or find their rhythm and is likely to have an adverse affect on the team's performances.

Allowing too many players to have a high level of creative freedom will likely see your team fail to adhere to your tactical instructions. Use creative freedom sparingly for full effect.

Passing style and tempo are linked. A short passing game works best with a slower tempo, whilst a direct, counter attacking style needs to be swift and quick.

If you like to play possession football and dictate the tempo setting your goalkeeper's distribution to short and to a near player may help you succeed.

Time-Wasting is useful late in the game but be sensible - employ it too early it can backfire and cost you the game.

Taking the time to set up player positions on set-pieces can be very rewarding. Taking advantage in these situations is often the difference between a draw and a win.

Allowing your players to close down often will naturally put the opposition players under duress, but be aware that good players will find ways to avoid pressure and expose your team.

Players who pick up knocks but have no injury indicator may be able to shake off their injury and return to a good level of fitness later in the game.

Determination can be a key attribute. Players with low determination usually react badly to going a goal down.

Beginner Level - Scouting

When viewing your team screen you can find out the level of scouting knowledge your club has by selecting 'Knowledge' from the scouting section in the 'tree' menu in the side-bar.

Your club's level of scouting knowledge can be increased by either signing scouts who already have a large knowledge base, acquiring an affiliate club or by sending your existing scouts out to investigate new territories.

Scouting your next opposition will give you an insight into their tactics and key players and help you plan your tactical approach for the game.

If you are managing a national team, it is now possible for you to scout players eligible for selection.

Beginner Level - Team Talks

Ensure that your players don't become complacent when leading well at half-time. Make sure they get the job done.

A confidence boost at half-time can often be what your players need to win the second-half and turn a game around.

Telling your players exactly what you think of them may buck their ideas up. Give them the hairdryer treatment when you feel it is needed, but be aware that some players may become disgruntled and complain to the media.

Remember how your players react to certain instructions in certain situations. Their mental attributes will determine how effective your instructions are.

Ignoring your players at half-time is generally a bad idea, but on rare occasions leaving them to stew over their performance may result in a better second period.

Keep your players happy. Praising wins keeps morale up and provides greater impetus for the team to string good performances together.

If morale is low, harsh team talks are unlikely to improve things. Aim to encourage your players and give them a lift.

Pre-game expectations will impact on performances. Telling your players you expect a win in games you aren't clear favourites for adds unnecessary pressure.

Informing your players that you expect a defeat may lower morale, although it can have a beneficial effect should you go on to lose as your players may not get too downhearted by events.

Be more generous with your praise for good performances when playing away from home.

Be less harsh with your criticism for poor performances when playing away from home.

Be more demanding of your players when playing at home, where your fans will be expectant of you to push on to try to get the right result.

Team talks can be very useful for morale, but don't always follow the same route. Constantly saying the same thing to your players may have less of an affect in the long-run.

Think carefully about singling out players for criticism or praise. Only do it when it's merited or risk causing rifts in the squad if the player or his team-mates feel it was unjust.

Beginner Level - Training

Players who are very versatile are more likely to successfully retrain to a new position.

Players who are very versatile are less likely to lose new positions they've learned through retraining when they're not playing or retraining the position.

When managing a semi-professional club, it's a good idea to try and tie down key players to full-time contracts to maximise their training time.

Staff on part-time contracts have less time to train players than full-time staff.

Intense physical training is best carried out in pre-season, before the domestic season is under way.

Too much intense physical training during the season is likely to tire your players out faster and increase the risk of injuries.

Player's attributes will naturally decrease during the off-season, when they are away on holiday or doing very little training.

The strength training category covers a player's natural fitness, stamina, strength and work rate.

The aerobic training category covers a player's acceleration, agility, balance, jumping, pace and reflexes.

The goalkeeping training category covers a player's aerial ability, handling, kicking, throwing and one on ones.

The tactics training category covers a player's anticipation, decisions, positioning, movement, team work and command of area.

The defending training category covers a player's tackling, marking and concentration.

The attacking training category covers a player's passing and creativity.

The shooting training category covers a player's finishing, long shots and composure.

The set-pieces training category covers a player's crossing, corners, free kicks, penalty taking and long throws.

When assigning coaches to training schedules, take care not overwork them. Even the best coaches can't give the players the attention to detail they want if they've too much to do.

Remember that your youth players are still developing and as such will tire quicker. Be considerate with your workloads when devising youth schedules.

Youth team coaches only train youth players, they do not work with or train senior players.

Goalkeeping coaches work with and train both senior and youth goalkeepers.

Fitness coaches work with the senior and youth players, but only deal with the physical aspects of training.

First-team coaches only work with and train the senior players, they do not work with or train youth players.

General coaches work with and train both senior and youth players.

Retraining a player to play in a new position can be a cost-effective way of providing additional cover for your team without having to make a new signing.

When training players for lower league clubs, it would be important to focus more on the physical aspects such as pace and stamina.

When viewing your players' profile you can check his progress in training over the past 12 months by selecting 'Attributes' from the tree menu under the training section.

Beginner Level - Transfers

Players who are transfer-listed are generally available at a knock down price and are easier to sign.

When approaching to sign a player on a free-transfer who is under the age of 24, the buying club will have to pay the selling club compensation.

Signing a player with a massive reputation can provide a commercial windfall through shirt sales.

A player may be more willing to sign for a club if they are one of his favourite teams.

If you offer an injured player to clubs, they are less likely to show interest until the player is over his injury.

A club may have more luck in signing a player if they are one of his favoured clubs.

Praising another manager in the media and building friendships with other managers may help your chances of having a transfer bid accepted for one of their players.

Making enemies with other managers by openly criticisng them may damage your chances of having a transfer bid accepted for one of their players.

When viewing a player profile for a player at another club, you can declare your interest in him by selecting 'Player Interaction' from the actions menu.

Should you wish to sign a player who is also interested in joining your club, you can sometimes unsettle him by 'declaring interest', which can make it easier to sign him in the long run.

Be careful when declaring interest in a player as you can unsettle those at your club who play in the same position.

When sending a player out on loan, with the 'Can be recalled' clause active, a club can recall the player at 24 hours' notice.

When sending a player out on a loan which involves a fee, the club cannot recall the player for the duration of the loan.

When sending a player out on loan, a club can prevent him from becoming cup-tied by ensuring the 'Can play in cup matches' clause is not active.

When trying to sign a player from another club who is on a long-term contract, be prepared that you may have to pay more than his estimated value to land him.

To avoid losing your players to other clubs on free transfers, you should look to renew contracts for those who are in the final year of their deal.

FM SoundPack 2008

They say ...

FM Soundpack 2008 is the return of the best and most popular soundpack that was done for FM2005 and FM2006. FM Soundpack 2008 is a full release for FM2008.

This enhances your game by removing the pointless sounds already in the game, and replacing them with top quality sounds from past CM (such as CM 01/02, etc).
It also comes with a huge selection of personal club chants from leagues around Europe, South America and other countries.

Its way more than double the chants you get with the game, plus they add way more to the match day atmosphere.

The code in the config is also edited to ensure it provides more atmosphere.

Works on Mac as well, providing you have a .rar executer.

This great soundpack is created by Jack Furness (aka furney89) and we got his written permission to post this here.
Thank you mate!

How To Install
Simply place the "sounds" & "match events" folders in the data folder, which is located on your C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2008\data.

You will be asked if you want to replace the original files, click "yes to all", however it is recommended you backup the original before use.

If you struggle to install, please look at the step-by-step picture guide (HOW TO INSTALL file which is for 2006 but works the same way), which is included in this pack.

For Best Results
Please make sure that you have selected to play "all" sounds in the options area inside the game
This can be found in the "preference" This will make sure you hear all the sounds.

Also if you want to hear all the sounds throughout the game, make sure the (highlight) slide bars (when viewing the 2d pitch) are set nearest to the middle as possible in order to hear as many chants as possible

Acknowledgments
This pack has been tested many times, nothing has been affected while testing and has NOT caused damage/loss to any files.

However if there are any problems you acknowledge that we have no responsibility for any loss or damage to your game and/or computer system.
so, why don't try it??

FM Genie Scout 2008

How to use
Unzip the FM Genie Scout 2008 folder, then run the FMGenieScout.exe file that you will find inside of it. No installation needed.

History and Credits
This software is created by Eugene Tarabanovsky. Eugene is from Ukraine and one of the most popular personalities throughout the FM community for his stunning work with FM Genie Scout 2007.

Kudos
Thank you Eugene for keeping up your great work and for giving the new scout utility to the world as a freeware once again!!

A Big Request
Please don't send any emails to Eugene with bugs of this program. The developer is aware of everything and you can always use the forums to post your bug findings.

Screenshots

Current Status
The current version is limited in functionality (beta 2, build 83), and you all know what the word beta means. You are using it at your own risk and that is as beta testers.

Know Issues
See the forum post FM Genie Scout 2008 Bugs and Workarounds for reference.

Your best bet to get this beta version working
1. Make sure you have FM08 and not WWSM08
2. Make sure you disable "Compress Saved Games" within the Game Preferences and Confirm it
3. Install latest official Patch 8.0.1 (and not one of the beta patches) [after that, you should have version 8.0.1 114310]
4. Start a new game with Patch 8.0.1
5. Save your game and Load it in FM Genie Scout 2008

Why you have this download and not genie.fm?
The file might have been leaked through the official SI forums, but it was Eugene himself, who uploaded the file online, in the known download folder of FM Genie Scout 2007. And of course, FM addicts were spying on this, until recently unprotected, folder all the time. The file was already available from Rapidshare (and still is) before we added it here.
You won't find it on the official Genie site, until all critical errors get fixed first and a new more stable beta will get out.

Compatibility
- This version seemed to be compatible with latest patch 8.0.1 (8.0.1.114310) and new games with the patch update. This means it wouldn't work with 8.0.0 or 8.0.1 for a game started in 8.0.0. However, some users reported that it worked for their 8.0.0 save game.
- Compatible with Windows Vista. However, Vista users should right click the downloaded FMGenieScout.exe file and run as Administrator, as well as running FM2008 as Administrator (otherwise Genie Scout won't be able to access the protected memory area of FM2008 - that's the way that viruses/trojans traditionally install themselves into other programs on your computer).
In addition, Vista users should also turn off User Access Control (UAC - Google "Turn off UAC" if not sure) if they are still having problems.

FM2008 Mini Scout

FM2008 Mini Scout is a simple scouting utility for Football Manager 2008.

Just like FM2008 Genie Scout, it’s a cheaters best friend for Football Manager 2008. It allows you to see every inch of a players data in FM2008, including his current ability as well as potential ability, so you can not only see how good a player is at the moment, but how much he’ll improve and who’ll be the stars of the future.

The good thing about FM2008 Mini Scout, over other scouting tools such as FM2008 Genie Scout is that it updates as you browse your game, rather than having to be loaded each time, it also allows you to edit player data, as well as scout your players, which is a benefit.

However it lacks the depth of other scouting tools such as FM2008 Genie Scout, but this tool is for those people who just want a quick peak at the hidden stats which make up there players in Football Manager 2008.

SI want YOU!!

Here’s the good news from SI Team

Seeing as the mass opinion is that everybody wants to see our update coverage expanded overseas, we’re willing to try and do our best to accomodate this. Unfortunately there is only so much time we get to do our own research as well as input it all in the Database.

Therefore if we had more researchers, we’d have more time to update. With more to update we could include more - getting the picture yet? Good then i don’t have to continue!!

So far we’re confident that we’ve got a good enough coverage on England, Scotland, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Australia and The U.S. that we’re looking to expand our “Knowledge base” into other countries.

Feel you’ve got what it takes to help take this place on to the next level? all you need to do is contact myself via email (admin@thisdomain - replace “thisdomain” with fmupdates.co.uk) or join up to the forums and list the errors you’ve noticed and we’ll get them changed.

Wanna work for Sports Interactive?

Well they are looking for people, but those who are wanting Miles’ job will have to wait a little longer as it’s only English Data researchers they are looking for at the moment!

SI are looking out for FM fans with a huge passion for and knowledge of the following clubs to research their team for the next version of the game:

Birmingham City
Bolton Wanderers
Bristol Rovers
Burnley
Colchester United
Crystal Palace
Fulham
Leicester City
Newcastle United
Nottingham Forest
Notts County
Walsall

Would any objective season ticket holder or regular matchgoer like to help? The task involves giving as-accurate-as-possible ratings to many aspects of each player’s game, including reserves and youth players, plus keeping us up to date of all transfers at the club, as well as their financial position.

Please email me if you are in a position to lend a hand. Your help would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

Football Manager 2008 Gold Demo Released

Here’s the good news you’ve all been waiting for …

We’re off to play the demo, the wonderful demo of FM. Or something.
Now, before you all rush off to download, some important information, as it could all get a bit confusing, so please read the following! There are demo’s for all 3 versions of the game, and for both formats (PC & Mac), the games being:
Worldwide Soccer Manager (for USA, Canada and Mexico) Futbol Manager (for the rest of South and Central America) Football Manager (everyone else).

You can find full details of each download by going to www.sigames.com and clicking on the logo of the game you wish to get a demo of. That will take you to the download page for each version of the game, so that you can see which leagues and languages the demo comes with, and download it.

With the demo of Football Manager, there are 2 versions – “vanilla” and “strawberry”. The “vanilla” version has no logos, only English and Scottish leagues, no player pics, no player histories etc, no facegen pictures and is available exclusively via the News of the World link, with huge thanks to play.com for hosting.

The “strawberry” demo of Football Manager has all assets, facegen, and all the things that the vanilla demo doesn’t have, just like the extra flavour a strawberry milkshake would over a vanilla one. It includes English, Danish, Swedish, French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese and Spanish languages, and the playable leagues are England, Scotland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Brazil and a Scandinavian group of Sweden, Norway, Finland & Denmark.

For Futbol Manager, which will be available exclusively as a digital download on release, the demo includes all assets and is in Spanish and Portuguese, with Argentina, Brazil and Mexico as the leagues playable.

For Worldwide Soccer Manager, which will be available as a boxed game exclusively from Amazon.com, and as a digital download, the demo includes all assets and can be played in English (US), English, Spanish & French, with the MLS, Mexico, England and Italy as the playable leagues.

All of the strawberry versions of the demo are available both as download and torrent files. As always, for those of you who use torrents, please leave them open after you’ve downloaded so that others can still get good download speeds.

Whilst I was hoping to give release dates for the game today too, that has not been possible, as we’re still checking the master discs before going into manufacture early next week (as long as no issues are found). As soon as we have the release dates, we’ll announce it via the blogs. And I am as keen as anyone for the game to be in manufacture, as it means that I get to shave off the stupid beard I am currently sporting, and get a haircut, which is much needed!

And that’s it for now – in the meanwhile, we hope the demo brings you joy, fun and seasons in the sun. If you have any positive feedback, or constructive criticism, then please visit our forums where there will be a special thread for first impressions.

Cheers

Miles
